We at Kids Dental Group recommend regular dental visits, where your dentist (or hygienist) will clean and examine your teeth, including diagnosis and treatment of any early symptoms. Cleanings are done to remove stains, plaque and tartar from teeth. Between dental visits, patients should use dental hygiene products and preventive techniques to maintain a healthy mouth.
Don’t forget that children are experts at mimicking what their parents do. Use this to your advantage by passing on your daily brushing and flossing habits to your child at an early age. Most children don’t have the dexterity necessary to thoroughly clean their own teeth, so your help will be needed.
Our pediatric dentists will advise whether your child needs fluoride supplements by determining how much fluoride the child is currently receiving, understanding his/her medical history, and evaluating the child’s diet. There are many convenient forms of topical fluoride that can be applied to the tooth enamel quickly and painlessly during a regular office visit and/or be used at home to prevent decay.
Sealants are hard plastic coatings that are usually placed on the chewing surface of permanent back teeth (molars and premolars) to protect them from decay. These teeth tend to get deep grooves in them, which are very hard to clean because toothbrushes can’t get into the grooves to remove all food and plaque. By sealing the deep grooves, the sealant protects the tooth by creating a smooth surface that is easy to clean and maintain, hence preventing cavities.
