Halloween Oral Health Tips

Halloween Oral Health Tips

As one of the most popular holidays amongst kids quickly approaches, at Kids Dental Group we have gathered some useful tips to help your children enjoy Halloween without jeopardizing their oral health. Check them out below.

Limit Eating Treats and Eat Treats With a Meal:

Limit snacking and let your kids eat their treats with a meal. Frequent snacking poses a higher risk of having tooth decay, so make sure to limit your child’s treat time. On the other hand, eating treats with a meal increases saliva, which helps clear acid from the mouth and prevents tooth cavities.

Check Your Child’s Treats:

Before sending your kid to trick or treat, tell him/her not to eat any treats before they come back home. As soon as your child arrives home after trick or treat, look through his/her bag of candies and carefully check the candies that he/she can have. Avoid sticky and hard candies that can stay longer in your child’s mouth.

Inform your Child “Excess Treats are Bad”:

Don’t prevent your child from enjoying the Halloween. Let him/her choose a reasonable amount of candy he/she wants. As parents, you must impart the knowledge that excess sugar and sweets are not good for oral health and therefore children should learn how to control their diet.

Ensure a Proper Oral Hygiene Routine:

No matter what time your children eat their treats, it is essential that they brush and floss right after eating to clear away any residues from their mouth. Rinsing can also help flush away the sugar and acid.

Show your kids that there is more to Halloween than eating candies. Play with them, go out together and meet other kids in your neighbourhood to enjoy and celebrate Halloween!
