Common Concerns for Your Child’s Teeth

Common Concerns for Your Child’s Teeth

We understand your top priority is your child’s health care. You can feel at ease knowing we share the same passion and commitment to their oral care too. It’s common to have questions or concerns regarding your child’s well being. At Kids Dental Group, we are happy to help! Here are a few common concerns that come up in pediatric dental care.

1) Baby Bottle Tooth Decay Babies can develop cavities before their teeth erupt. A common cause is from prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to drinks that contain sugar. This includes milk too! This is often the case when the baby is put to bed with a bottle, or when a bottle is used as a pacifier for a fussy baby. To minimize the risk of baby bottle tooth decay, clean your baby’s mouth by wiping their gums with a clean gauze pad. When your child’s teeth start to come in, you can brush them gently with a child’s size toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice).

2) Dental Emergencies

Accidents can happen anywhere or anytime. It’s vital for parents to take action during a dental emergency. Take your child to the dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.

3) Thumbsucking

This is a natural reflex for infants and is not cause for concern unless the habit is prolonged. Most children should stop thumbsucking by age 4. If your child continues with the habit after their permanent teeth have come in, it can cause problems with tooth alignment and your child’s bite.

These are just a few common concerns we come across at Kids Dental Group. It is important to be diligent on your child’s dental care. Have them check in with us at one of our locations in Stouffville, Richmond Hill or Markham to make sure their teeth stay healthy and strong. Those precious smiles are our top priority!
