It’s a new year, but some practices never get old! Good oral hygiene routines will help to keep those painful cavities at bay. This is especially true for kids, as they can’t be expected to totally avoid sugary treats and beverages. While they can have their cake and eat it too, it’s our job as parents to keep those smiles beautiful and healthy. Our pediatric dental professionals at Kids Dental Group have some tips to help keep your family cavity-free in 2021!
Begin Good Oral Habits Early
Food particles that get stuck in teeth are decomposed by bacteria that converts them into acids. A combination of these acids, food debris, bacteria, and saliva mixes to create plaque. This acidic compound dissolves the enamel and forms cavities.
This is why regular flossing and brushing teeth twice a day is so important. However, kids chafe at doing these mundane duties, and that’s why giving them an incentive works. Choosing a reward centered on oral health is best; for instance, you could buy them tasty floss or a musical toothbrush.
Limit Sugary Foods
We understand that avoiding sugary foods and candy altogether can be challenging. Even if you don’t have any in your home, your children could still encounter treats in school or elsewhere. You should teach your kids to take treats in moderation, and educate them about the negative effects they could have on their dental health. Furthermore, you can encourage them to rinse their mouths after eating a treat, or even brush their teeth.
Fluoride Is Your Friend!
Fluoride helps to strengthen your tooth enamel, so it only makes sense to increase your fluoride intake! Many cities have fluoride in their water. If yours doesn’t, or if you drink purified water at home, your child might need to get it from other sources. We recommended buying toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride as an active ingredient!
Our professionals at Kids Dental Group can also prescribe fluoride supplements as they see fit. Ask us about fluoride during your next appointment!
