Try to make them feel a part of the club by telling them that all members of the family see a dentist! This way, they don’t feel singled out and instead feel it’s a sign of growing up!

It’s important not to get too technical with a young child, but to still provide basic information. Let them ask open ended questions about your own experience and try to avoid words like, shot, pain, or hurt as this may cause them to worry. It’s important to tell them they may feel slight pressure during cleaning or assessment but that is a normal part of maintaining strong and healthy teeth. When you have an open dialogue with your child, you are creating a warm, safe space that will help ease their fears.
