Protect Your Child’s Smile: Why Kids Need To Wear Mouthguards

When kids play sports, there is always the risk of an accident. When we think of common injuries, broken bones and concussions often come to mind. However, teeth can also be affected by playing contact sports such as football, soccer, and hockey.

Children’s teeth are more susceptible to damage because they have a thinner enamel than adults and their tooth size is smaller When children play rough, even by accident, they are susceptible to oral injuries.

An oral injury can include a broken tooth, chips or tooth loss. This is why kids of all ages need to wear a mouthguard while playing sports.

What Is A Mouthguard?

A mouthguard is a piece of cushioning inserted into the mouth to protect your child’s teeth, lips, and gums. The mouthguard should be custom-made to fit your child’s mouth perfectly.

There are three main types of mouthguards for kids:

Stock Mouthguard

This type is pre-made and can be bought at many general merchandise stores and sporting goods shops, such as Sport Chek and Sporting Life. The downside with this kind is that they often do not fit well and can move around inside the mouth during playtime.

Custom Mouthguard

The second type is a custom-made mouthguard which is professionally created by your dentist or orthodontist. The fit and comfort of the mouthguard will be perfect for your child’s teeth and can prevent serious injury to their smile. At Kids Dental Group we are proud to offer custom mouthguards for our patients.

Boil and Bite Mouthguard

The last type is a pre-packaged boil and bite mouthguard. This type is usually soaked in hot water before being placed in your child’s mouth. Then, they bite it down, causing the plastic to mold around their teeth and gums for a perfect fit.

While this option may be cheaper than having it custom-made, the fit will not be as effective in protecting your child’s teeth against injuries.

Benefits of Wearing Mouthguards

With school already starting, it is important to consider having a custom-made mouthguard for your child to wear while they play sports.

If you are not convinced yet, here are just a few of the many benefits that your child will get from wearing a mouthguard:

1. Prevention of dental injuries – keeps their teeth and smile safe.

2. Increased self-esteem – if they are afraid to play due to a potential injury, it can give them confidence!

3. Easy to wear – a custom made mouthguard is easy to wear as it is made especially for your child, it will stay in place.

With the use of a practical and custom-made mouthguard, you can rest easier knowing your child is protected while they play.
