Should My Child Use a Manual or Electric Toothbrush?

Should My Child Use a Manual or Electric Toothbrush?

We know parents want what’s best for their children. They’ll explore all options to find the best schools, programs and the list goes on. A question we often get is ‘should my child use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush’?

At Kids Dental Group we are proud to provide the parents of our pediatric dental patients with advice and support to help them achieve optimal oral health. When it comes to the different types of toothbrushes, there are reasons why your child can use either or.

Benefits Of A Manual Toothbrush

Manual toothbrushes are affordable and come in many shapes and colours. They do not require batteries or charging and they are light and easy to carry. Many manual toothbrushes come in fun colours or have your child’s favourite characters on them. They can also be very easy for children to hold.

Benefits Of An Electric Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes are often more effective at cleaning teeth. They may be better for children who have trouble brushing properly. Their oscillating bristles help provide a deeper clean and assist with movements that a child would manually need to do. Children should be properly guided on how to use an electric toothbrush to keep up good oral health.

Electric brushes also encourage children to brush longer than they might with a manual brush. This is because many electric toothbrushes come with a built-in timer.

What Should Your Child Use?

Children under three should have their teeth brushed by an adult. Children three to six years old should be monitored and assisted by an adult when brushing. After the age of six, we recommend checking in with us at Kids Dental Group to see how your child’s skills are progressing. Around this time, we can explore using an electric toothbrush. We believe it’s important for children to learn the essentials of brushing their teeth the proper way. Once we have established a good foundation, we can explore switching their toothbrushes.

Pediatric Dental Care

We are accepting new patients at our Kids Dental Group locations in Richmond Hill, Markham and Stouffville. We can help your child from their first dental exam all the way through their teen years. From checkups and cleanings, to fillings and braces – we’re here for your family every step of the way!

We know how important it is for parents to feel confident about their children’s health care, and especially their oral health. That’s why our team takes time to explain what they are doing, and why. This way you understand everything going on during the visit. Our goal is not just to provide quality treatment, but to also give peace of mind for both parents and little smiles alike.
