Common Oral Problems in Children

Do you want to ensure that your children maintain a healthy oral cavity? Dental education is essential for parents to keep their children’s teeth, gums and mouth healthy at all times. Here at Kids Dental Group, we promote dental education among parents so that they are aware of the early signs of common dental problems to prevent further oral diseases and complications from happening.

Here are some of the common oral problems that you may encounter as your child is growing:

Thumb sucking : Thumb sucking is normal among infants and young children, but if this behaviour goes beyond the age of 5, then oral problems, such as misaligned teeth, overbite, and upper and lower jaw problems may occur.

Baby Bottle Tooth Decay: This condition is also known as nursing caries or early childhood caries. Baby bottle tooth decay usually occurs when the baby’s teeth are in frequent contact with sugary drinks, such as milk, fruit juices, sugar water, and formula. The bacteria in the mouth feeds on these sugary drinks, which causes caries.

Tongue Thrusting: Tongue thrusting is common during infancy, and it happens when a child’s tongue move forward against the lips when swallowing or sealing the mouth. According to the American Speech Language Hearing Association, if this dental problem continues as your child grows, it could lead to Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders, which can cause problems in speaking, eating and drinking.

When it comes to pediatric dentistry, our dental offices in Stouffville, Richmond Hill, and Markham can help! Identifying oral problems in children early on can prevent further damage to their oral cavity. Contact or visit us now to learn how to deal with common oral problems in children.
